This could mean that the law will be revoked or moderated toward a more human rights bend.China wants to show the world, especially now before the Beijing hosted 2008 Olympics, how fair and humane it is.But the underlying problem is this: Communists just do not “get” human rights. In Vietnam, starting in 1975 after the fall of Saigon, this same law went into place. A better name than re-education would be “torture” or “brainwashing.” My brother in law Fong died in this system under this law.My Uncle Chi, whom we buried this last Saturday (God rest his soul) spent eight years in this system under this law.In the aautui,mn of 2005, the Vietnamese government used this law to arrest and hold in prison, without charges, U.S. citizen Mrs. Cuc Foshee. She languised in jail for 14 months, because of a law just like the one in China. So just when we thought China would start to behave like a civilized member of the world community, a few weeks ago President Hu Jintao went to Sudan to chat up business opportunities: despite an embargo by all other civilized nations and the UN because of what the U.S. calls the “genocide” in Darfur. Now China is on the verge of renewing a criminal law that violates every precept of human rights. The system, known as “laojiao”, allows police to send mainly petty criminals to jail for up to four years. If China does not eliminate this cruel law: Shame on them. John E. Carey |
