The youngest member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (LegCo), Nathan Law, has told BBC HARDtalk that Hong Kong requires “higher autonomy” or the cornerstone of “one country, two systems” will be eroded.
Under “one country, two systems”, Hong Kong was granted a high degree of autonomy from the central Beijing government for a period of 50 years, after it became a special administrative region of China in 1997.
Mr Law won a seat in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council in elections earlier this month, becoming the youngest lawmaker in the city’s history at 23 years old.
“Lots of policy implemented is restricting our freedoms and even threatening our personal safety. So let me make it very clear, we are not the ones who disrupt the status quo, but the Beijing government,” he said.
