China ended 2016 by flexing its military might and conducting the country’s first “blue sea” training exercise in the western Pacific.

“Blue sea” is a term used to describe a navy’s global capabilities, as opposed to regional and coastal capabilities.

The training exercise involved aircraft carrier Liaoning and several J-15 carrier-borne fighters jets – testing comprehensive combat capacity and aviation support ability in China’s Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the contentious South China Sea.

“We conducted the military training with full elements of aircraft carrier formation taking part in and following the whole procedures in order to construct command system and support system for China’s aircraft carrier formation to conduct operations at blue sea, which lays solid foundation for the aircraft carrier Liaoning to further strengthen combat capacity and support ability,” chief of staff of command post of the aircraft carrier formation Gao Zhaorui said.

China’s first attempt at aircraft carriers, Liaoning, will conduct various training exercises this year.

The nation is hoping the exercises promote research and development for more Chinese aircraft carriers.

“In the new year, according to the plan, we will increase the difficulty and intensity of the training, take initiative to explore the rules of aircraft carrier conducting operations,” deputy political commissar of Lianoning Wang Zesen said.
