The terror cell responsible for attacks in Catalonia this week had collected more than 100 gas canisters to use to devastating effect.

Some 120 canisters were found at a house, said to be used by the terrorist gang, that blew up in the town of Alcanar on Wednesday – the night before a terrorist mowed down pedestrians with a rented white Fiat van on Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

It has since been claimed that the 12-strong terror cell planned to rent three large lorry-type vehicles, pack them each full of butane gas and TATP plastic explosive, and drive them into busy hotspots in Barcelona city.

One van was to be driven into the Sagrada Familia, another was to be detonated on Las Ramblas, and the third was going to be blown up in Barcelona’s port area.

However when the gas prematurely detonated in Alcanar – killing at least two of the terror cell – it thwarted their plans.

Catalan authoritites have confirmed that one of the victims killed on Las Ramblas was British-Australian seven-year-old Julian Cadman.Police are still hunting for the driver of the van that hit dozens of people on Las Ramblas on Thursday afternoon, killing 13.

A second attack in the early hours of Friday morning left one woman dead in the coastal town of Cambrils. Five suspected jihadists were shot dead by police in the beach town.

Giving an update to reporters, Catalan Police chief Josep Lluis Trapero said the cell was still believed to be made up of 12 men, and attacks had been planned for more than six months.

Two sets of human remains – which were found in the rubble of the house in Alcanar – are yet to be identified. One person remains at large while four were under arrest, he said.

The man at large was driving the van that hit victims on Las Ramblas, Trapero said. Police apparently know his identity, but are not going to reveal it.

But police have confirmed that they are searching for Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, whom Spanish media have named as the driver.
